Forget Scandi, interiors are turning Japandi

We are not sure whose job it is to come up with the next interiors trend, but we take our hat off to whoever came up with Japandi.

Blending the minimalism of Japanese design with Scandinavian practicality, it’s a style which balances clean lines and a natural palette with the layering and cosiness of the hygge philosophy and it can be adapted to suit any budget.

The colour palette

Forget stark white walls and instead think muted greens, duck-egg blues and soft charcoal to add definition. This bedroom interior featuring a Michelle Collins rug (£249, furniturevillage.co.uk) perfectly demonstrates the Japandi colour scheme.

The material

Like everything else about this trend the key is getting a balance between contrasting materials. Look out for statement pieces which pair light wood with striking dark metal such as the Brooklyn bookcase range (from £399) from oakfurnitureland.co.uk.

The look

Draw the eye line down with low tables that instantly create a taste of Japandi style. We love this low plinth table made of marble (£1,500, nest.co.uk) and the dark colour adds an instant accent to any room.

The accessories

Both Japanese and Scandinavian interiors are inspired by the landscape. Bring the outside in by choosing a selection of plants for every room in the house – even the bathroom. Check out leafenvy.co.uk which has a fabulous range.
